Yang Shi (SM'09-F'17) received the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada, in 2005. From 2005 to 2009, he was a faculty member with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada. He is currently a Professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, Canada. His current research interests include networked and distributed control systems, model predictive control, mechatronics and robotics, industrial cyber-physical systems, and energy systems.

Dr. Shi received the University of Saskatchewan Student Union Teaching Excellence Award in 2007 and the Faculty of Engineering Teaching Excellence Award at the University of Victoria in 2012. He received the JSPS Invitation Fellowship (short-term) in 2013, the 2015 Craigdarroch Silver Medal for Excellence in Research at the University of Victoria, and the Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers in 2017. Currently, he is a Co-Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics; he also serves as an Associate Editor for Automatica, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, and IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics. He is a Fellow of the CSME (Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering), ASME (the American Society of Mechanical Engineers), and the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC). He is a registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia, Canada.

Ahmed Refaey Hussein

Ahmed Refaey Hussein (S’03-M’07-SM’15) is a Faculty member and the Director of the IoT Research Lab at the ECE department, Manhattan College as well as an Adjunct Research Professor at Western University. Dr. Hussein’s previous positions include: a Sr. Embedded Systems Architect, R ∧ D Group, Mircom Technologies Ltd from 2013-2016; a Postdoctoral Fellow at ECE Department, Western University from 2012-2013; and a Professional Researcher at the LRTS lab, Laval University in the field of wireless communications hardware implementations from 2007-2011.

Prior to joining Laval University, Dr. Hussein was a System/ Core Network Engineer leading a team of junior engineers and technicians in the telecom field in the three prominent companies of Fujitsu, Vodafone, and Alcatel-Lucent. Dr. Hussein received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Alexandria University, Egypt in 2003 and 2005, respectively; and Ph.D. degree from Laval University, Quebec, Canada in 2011.
